From Hell

I got a love/hate relation with this horror movie from 2001, directed by Albert & Allan Hughes.
This is a beautiful filmed thing, and it really captures how you imagine it would be back in 1888, in foggy London. All the filth and dirt are there. Good portraits of the fallen women and the raw men. Someone is slaughtering the prostituted in a macabre way. There is panic in the air, because the cops do not seem able to catch the killer. The leader of the investigation, young opium-head Abberline, is in for a hard nut to crack. Along the way he falls in love with one of the prostitutes. They sneak into the case and discovering that it’s a bigger thing then they first thought. This film has some real bloody scenes in it. Very realistic. That Jack the Ripper must have been a mean mother… You also gets convinced that this movie finally gives you the answer whom “Jack†really was.
The movie claims to be based on the comic book that Alan Moore wrote the script for. And its here my hate for From Hell comes in. The basic story is the same, but they have lost a lot of things that’s in the book. I think they could have been a whole lot more true to the book. And even if Johnny Depp is a fine actor, and at his best in this movie, but I confess that it is annoying me that he in Moore’s version is a middle aged fat guy whit a moustache and a thing for beer. Not opium. Buts that’s just me.
This is great movie. 2 hours with Jack!
I recommend everyone to see this movie. It could be a bit confusing to follow the story if you don’t have a clue of what happened in 1888´s Whitechapel, but if so, watch it twice.
